Eternal Sunset is a fictional mixtape created as a score for the inaugural production of Charles Green’s play “In the Castle of Eternal Sunset: A Module for Ten 0th Level Characters.”

It is a beautiful play about storytelling, chance, pasts and futures, and formative friendships.

For the show, I composed songs for five fictional “bands” trying to evoke the music that two teenagers in the early 2000s would listen to as they played Dungeons & Dragons in their basement. We dubbed the music onto a cassette and played it through a boombox on stage as though it were a mixtape the characters themselves had made for their gaming session.

Much of this music was built from small, often unreleased samples of my own past bands, some from when I was a teenager myself. Those tiny samples (a drum part, a vocal line) became seeds for these compositions. Then I overdubbed new guitar, bass, synth, organ, etc. to make brand new music, but directly tied to my own youth and sonic history.
